Project Background

Flooding along Newmarket Creek has caused serious issues for those who reside close to its banks for well over a decade. Repeat flooding has damaged homes on both sides of the creek, with The City of Newport News and The City of Hampton both reporting properties with repeat losses. Identifying mitigation strategies in this area is critical, as it is home to lower-income and vulnerable populations who may have particular difficulty recovering from flood damage.

The City of Hampton and City of Newport News have jointly received funding through FEMA’s Flood Mitigation Assistance program to identify long-term solutions to chronic flooding in the Central Newmarket Creek Watershed, and more specifically, the focus area outlined in yellow on the map below. The flood mitigation strategies identified through this effort will build on previous studies and complement ongoing projects in the Newmarket Creek Watershed.
