Wakulla County is utilizing this site as a resource for information and engagement. We are excited about the opportunities the Wakulla Education Center will provide and want to garner feedback to utilize in our planning.

Brief History of the Site

The Wakulla Education Center property is the oldest educational site in Wakulla County. Established in the early 1900s as a grade school, it later became Shadeville High School, which served as the county’s only high school for African American students from 1931 to 1968, primarily supporting the communities of Shadeville and Hyde Park.

The campus continued to operate as Shadeville Elementary School until 1989. In the years that followed, it housed adult education programs and pre-kindergarten classes, remaining an important community resource until its closure in 2025.
